Basically, what is the cost of setting up a website where vendors can create accounts and either do work by the hour or sell parts. Additional add-ons would include a chat function between customers and vendors. Are their companies that have templates for these sites? How much might a custom one run? Note: I am not looking to build something as large scale as any of those, but a micro version of one to begin that will serve a particular market. Also, what might the running costs be? As you can probably tell I'm new to this space and will be looking for mentors. Thanks!
You appear to have a very broad concept. The more features you add in the more expensive it will be. I'd recommend figuring out the key feature you think will appeal to potential users and build a MVP based off that. If that feature doesn't attract users, having the other features wouldn't have helped.
I'd be happy to talk through your idea and make some recommendations building a test platform.

Hello,
Such platforms cost tens of millions to build, maintain and especially advertise. Even i you build one, the marketing budget should be quite high.
You also need something to differentiate them, like for example Clarity is different from Upwork due to consulting focus.
If you still want to do this. start doing some specs, have them reviewed by a system architect to chose a technology that fits and to estimate the development hours than put together a team and build it
Please let me know if you need any help, .i have a solid experience in building platforms from scratch.
Thanks,
Seb

I would have to agree with Brian on this answer, that determining the features you need to meet your markets needs is the first place to start. Providing you with a black and white answer is very difficult without having more specific specs. I would be happy to sit down and review everything with you and help you determine the needed features, the nice to haves, and estimated costs associated with each. There are a number of different directions you can go in even the initial development and hosting etc, which would effect even your ongoing costs. Send me a message if you would like to discuss further, as I am quite certain I can assist you in determining your early stage needs and send you in a direction that will help you out. WITHOUT costing you an arm and a leg just to get your feet wet and test out your concept.
Take care.

You can get someone to build a knockoff website for a few grand. The real question is what you hope to gain with a "me too" approach.
The secret to success: I have had the pleasure of knowing and working with some of the biggest names in business, celebrities, actors, entrepreneurs, business people, and companies from startup to billion dollar operations. The number one reason for their success is doing what they know and love while doing it in new, creative, and innovative ways.
While you are thinking, think big and think of something at least 1% better, newer, or different. And being cheaper is not a winning strategy.
Best of luck,
Take massive action and never give up.

There are 3 best possible options to build a multi-vendor ecommerce marketplace:
From scratch - It will cost you very high and you need to have the sound technical understanding to managing the platform.
Plugins & extensions: With plugins or extensions like woocommerce, you can set up a multi-vendor marketplace at very less cost. However, the platform will not be scalable.
Turnkey Solutions - The best option is to choose ready to launch or turnkey solutions. Turnkey solutions are cost-effective & provide great flexibility.
As per your requirements, you can start with Yokart multi-vendor platform. Yokart is one of the best turnkey multi-vendor platforms that comes at a minimal price. For more details, you can visit here: https://www.yo-kart.com/

Setting up a vendor-based e-commerce website can be a bit more involved and can therefore cost more than a typical e-commerce website. Vendor-based e-commerce websites are more complex because they have to integrate with a vendor system like Shopify, Amazon, eBay, or Etsy. Do you have a specific platform in mind that you'd like to use?
