If you will be ordering the bags in bulk, then, China is a good place to get them made. Will save you a lot of money. Quality has improved a lot in cast few years. For material selection, design, and other details, you will have to connect with a designer. I can help with the research work and also shortlist manufacturers that can deliver a good deal. As you are developing the gym bag, I assume you already have the expertise on the material selection, design elements, quality expectation.

For manufacturer selection, 3 things are important.
1- Quality. How do they control their quality in mass production? What is their general approach? To save the day or continuously improvement?
2- Pricing as usual.
3- If they are really know what they are doing? Are they only manufacturing products or also designing/developing? For how long are they doing the business and how capable are they? This will help you to speed up your project, they can help you to solve the problems from the beginning. In design stage, prototype, manufacturing. They will also help with material selection as they have long time experience.

Let me know if you have any further questions. I am happy to help.

It all depends on the quantity.

If you are looking for a small quantity, with flexibility in the required design, you can literally search "gym bag OEM" on Alibaba.com

If you are looking to penetrate the market with a premium bag, then your best bid is to connect with a manufacturer in Indonesia, where a lot of renowned brands work to produce their sportswear.

An excellent alternative to manufacturing offshore is to take a look at Maker's Row. The site makes the process of selecting manufacturers, designers, etc. very easy for first-timers. The co-founder of Reddit is an investor.

The first considerations would be based around your specific requirements. Are you going for the toughest bag? The lightest? Something that has a ton of tech built in? Those types of questions have a tendency to lead you to your competition. You can then use the materials of choice from your competition as your baseline.

From here, you can start looking at materials that would beat or at least match your competition. A comparison of the materials should include the technical aspects, as well as the commercial. How much is it? But also, where is it readily available? That will start to guide you to manufacturers. Of course, there is shipping to consider from the manufacturer to your distribution center. So you'll want to compare if it's cheaper to use a manufacturer closer to your distribution at the cost of shipping the raw material or if it's cheaper to use a manufacturer further away and pay to ship the finished product.

Sorry, that ended up being a bit longer of an answer than I was originally aiming for. As you can see, there are a lot of questions that need to be answered to guide you towards your material selection and manufacturer selection. Feel free to reach out to discuss this with me further. I have a few manufacturers in North Mexico who have textile/sewing operations. I'd be interested in seeing how your business develops!
